Dog rescued by coastguard after 30ft cliff plunge

A SHAGGY dog story ended as a happy 'tail' after a springer spaniel was rescued by coastguards following a 30ft cliff fall.

Bev and Bryan Warne, of Roslyn Close, St Austell, the owners of Bramble, say they can't thank the coastguard enough for their efforts in saving their dog following its dramatic rescue last week.

Mrs Warne, 43, said: "Without the help of the coastguard I don't know what we would have done."

The ten-year-old dog was out walking with his owner Mr Warne and the family's other springer spaniel Buster along the Carlyon Bay cliff paths on Thursday when the drama unfolded.

During the walk both Buster and Bramble bounded off into the undergrowth but only Buster reappeared.

Mr Warne spent the next two and a half hours scouring the cliff path, even enlisting the help of the golf club's green-keeper Ian Norman to lend a hand with the cliff and beach search until they found a hole near where the dog had disappeared.

Despite the party's desperate calls, Bramble – who is trained not to bark as part of his role as a working dog – only let out a yelp when one of the group threw down a stone where they thought he had fallen.

Mr Warne said: "I dialled for the coastguard while we were at the scene and then took our other dog back to the house. By the time I got back the coastguard was already there."

Within 10 minutes more than 20 men from Charlestown and Mevagissey crews had arrived at the scene and within 45 minutes Bramble had been winched to safety unharmed by his 30ft cliff fall, wagging his tail at being reunited with his owners.

'Relief'

Mrs Warne, who arrived in the middle of the rescue, said: "You can't imagine the relief we felt when we knew they had the ability to get him out when we couldn't. We were so grateful to them, especially the effort they were putting in for a dog. You realise in circumstances like this that people can be very kind and the emergency services do a fantastic job."

"We'd like to thank the coastguard for giving up their time on a cold Thursday evening in October to give us a very happy ending," she said.

And as for Bramble? "He'll be staying close to home for a few days," added Mrs Warne.

What A May Day!

Just a quick one to remind the collective, that this Saturday is May's Country Store Fun Pet Day.

As you know, we are putting on a bit of a show to let country show revellers know what we do at Sticker Dog Club. It would be great if we could get as many of you guys down as possible to strut your stuff in the ring. All are welcome and all joking aside its just a bit of fun really so there is no pressure for your dogs to perform, just come on down and if nothing else it will be a great as some extra socialisation.

The event starts at 11am so if you could rock up at 10.45 that would be brill', and its not weather dependant as its all under cover!

The Dogs Dinner

Is your dog not massively interested in food treats whilst training, or are you trying some new and challenging manoeuvres that require a super-duper reward? Well have no fear, Sylvia is here, with a her Lush Liver Surprise. Give it a go, try it now then sit back and watch your dog do the hoovering and read the paper.

Well OK its not that good but it might help a bit in motivating your dog to please you!

You'll need:

· 1 lb. chicken liver
· 1 cup graham cracker crumbs
· 3 tablespoons molasses or honey
· ¼ cup parsley

Place all ingredients in the bowl of food processor. Process until smooth. Pour into a microwaveable container, approximately 8" square or round. Microwave on high until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. This takes 7 minutes in my microwave, but your mileage may vary. When cooked, turn out of pan immediately, allow the bottom to dry since it will be damp from condensation, and cut into squares while still warm.
Spread bits on a foil-lined cookie sheet and bake at 200° for 1.5 hours.
Freeze or refrigerate.

Whatever you do, don't make her angry....
Great work to the great and the good who made it to last night's sessions. I hope you had as much fun as we did and got something from the evening. The big cheese will be back next week, so in an effort to impress, I thought I'd send out a reminder as to our homework for the week!

Puppy Class - Its all about getting your puppy to bring his favourite toy back to you and to give it up in exchange for a juicy treat. Don't worry if its tough at first, start small (keep your dog close and don't throw the toy too far), and work up slowly to a bigger throw. Don't chase Fido around the room, he must always come to you and surrender his prize possession (for something equally nice). If you are struggling then why not try getting a 5 meter training lead from your pet store for some extra encouragement to return.

Pre-Beginners - A nice and calm one for you guys. work on your sits stays, getting the hound to lie down calm and still for an extended period. Always set your dog up to win by starting short, maybe keeping him down for 10 seconds, and build from there. The Good Citizens Bronze Award requires you to keep in control for a minute in a room with other dogs, so that's your target.

Beginners - A couple of beauties for you guys this week. Dogs in a sit, wait and you take a step forward, turn to the left and with a treat in hand to guide your dog so that he comes to your left side into a sit. This will help your pooch to get nice movement when turning left when walking to heel. Oh yes then there the tricky 'Down' mid recall.

Keep up the good work, little and often is the key! Sylvia will be delighted to see our progress, so lets make her happy! : )

Rottweiler honoured for stopping Coventry sex attacker

A two-year-old Rottweiler has been recognised for his bravery after he saved a woman from a sex attacker.

The dog, named Jake, chased off the man as he molested a woman on Hearsall Common, Coventry, in July 2009.

Jake, who stood guard over the victim until police arrived, received his honour at an RSPCA event in Shrewsbury.

The attacker was convicted of serious sexual assault and jailed for four years.

Jake, who was honoured at the Prostar Stadium at an RSPCA conference on Saturday, was nominated by police for the bravery award and medallion after the incident.

Det Con Clive Leftwich, from Coventry police station, said: "From our point of view Jake the Rottweiler stopped a serious sexual assault from becoming even worse."

Liz Maxted-Bluck, who rescued Jake from an RSPCA home in December 2008, said: "He is such a lovely natured dog and is very nosey so I think that was why he went to investigate that day when he heard the screams.

"After I called the police, he stayed alert and close to us like he was guarding us.

"It is brilliant that he is receiving this award from the RSPCA, I am really proud."

Glenn Mayoll, manager of RSPCA Coventry Animal Centre, said it was "immensely proud" of Jake.

He added: "This story just goes to show that a rescue dog can be a great addition to any family."

Big rise in violent dog-on-dog attacks, say pet groups

Skipper was attacked in a park by two large huskies, but fortunately survived

A big increase in the number of violent dog-on-dog attacks, particularly in urban areas, has been noticed by pet charities.

They say responsible dog owners are being forced to walk their pets at night because of the fear of other dogs attacking them during the day.

Present laws banning certain types of dangerous dogs do not work, they add.

The Dogs Trust is backing a "deed not the breed" bill for England and Wales currently going through Parliament.

'Increasing trend'

Although no figures have been collated, Dogs Trust veterinary director Chris Laurence said: "We are getting more and more reports of dogs that are perfectly innocently walking through a park being set upon by an aggressive dog.

"It's an increasing trend and sadly when there is a disparity in size the small dog ends up being killed."

Pet charities said it was not only so-called status dogs that were to blame for the attacks.

Lord Redesdale, who is putting forward the bill, explained if a notice order was placed on a dog, it would be micro-chipped. He said this would mean an owner could be linked with the dog, which would make them more responsible.

"That would mean that the owner would be much more careful about the behaviour of the dog because they couldn't get away with saying it's not my dog, it's somebody else's dog, I'm just walking it for a friend," he said.

"The court can then impose a notice order saying, in a graduated way, saying that the dog has to be on a lead, the dog has to be muzzled, whatever, the owner has to go to training. If they break that condition then of course the penalties become more serious."

'Dog Asbos'

But dog trainer and behaviourist Robert Alleyne said legislation alone would not prevent attacks. He said dog owners needed to be trained to understand their pets so they, in turn, would listen to their owners.

He said: "With dogs who are aggressive the most important thing is to get the dog to understand that when the owner talks they have to listen. It's not a discussion anymore."

Elaine Pendlebury, senior veterinary surgeon for the PDSA, says the responsibility should be placed on the owners.

"I think it's owning the appropriate dog for you. You know, they call them status dogs but they're not status dogs. They're more like weapons really that are going out to attack."

Dog owner Chris Hannaford said her springer spaniel Skipper was lucky to be alive after it was attacked in a park by two large huskies.

She told the BBC: "They had him and he was sort of on his side. I thought they were going to kill him. He was just screaming, he was really making an awful noise, like a baby screaming."

Legislation dubbed "dog Asbos", similar to that proposed for England and Wales, is already in place in Scotland. In Northern Ireland it will soon be an offence to allow a dog to attack and injure another person's dog.

The Indoor Kennel

A safe, comfortable den for your dog, inside your own home?
An indoor kennel should ideally only be used as a safe place where your adult dog can take himself if he needs to get away from things that worry him and as his own space, where he will not be disturbed and can rest – with the door permanently open.
However, it can also be temporarily used for training purposes – as an aid for housetraining and for safely confining a puppy for short periods when you cannot supervise and overnight in the bedroom, for example. Please note that if a dog or puppy is shut in an indoor kennel for long periods of time, this can become a serious welfare issue and is not something that we recommend.

What is an indoor kennel and where can I get one from?
There are several different types of indoor kennel, but probably the most common and easy to use is the one that looks like a cage, with one or two doors on the side and/or end. This type is made of wire mesh and folds down for easy storage when not in use.
 When you choose your dog’s kennel it needs to be big enough for him to be able to sit, stand up and turn around in. He must also be able to lay flat on his side and stretch his legs out without touching the sides. Remember to allow room for how much your puppy may grow.
 You can buy an indoor kennel from larger pet stores, dog shows and from some veterinary clinics. You can also find them advertised in dog magazines and on the Internet, where they can be sent to you by mail order.
 Although they may appear to be fairly expensive to buy, try to remember that they may save you a lot of money by preventing chewing and toilet accidents in your home.
 Because the kennels are pretty impossible to damage, you should be able to sell yours on, if and when you don’t need it any more.

How can I make it a nice place, where my dog will want to go?
The kennel should be made into a place where your dog can feel happy and relaxed, so you need
to set it up so that it will be cosy and comfortable for him.
 Put it in a part of the home where you spend a lot of time, so that your dog has you nearby and
won’t be lonely to start with – or he may begin by hating his new home.
 Remember that you can move it into the bedroom for him to use at bedtime. Dogs sleep better
with company and if he has his own comfortable sleeping area it will help to keep him off the
bed.
 To help keep out draughts, try to place it in a corner and then cover the back and perhaps also
the sides with a blanket or towel to make it more den-like.
 Put comfortable bedding inside that is also easy to clean. If you have a puppy, you may need
to place some newspaper at one end, in case he has an accident.
 You will need to give your dog access to water, so put in a water bowl or get one that clips onto
the side of the kennel, so that it cannot get knocked over.

How can I make my dog like the indoor kennel?
If you are using it for housetraining it is important that you get your dog used to his kennel very gradually and without force. If you just shove him in and shut the door, you’ll frighten him and he won’t want to go in again.
 Put some treats in the kennel to tempt your dog inside. Do this several times a day and start to give your dog all of his meals inside the kennel. Don’t close the door yet.
 If your dog has bedding that he has been using up until now, after a few days place this in the kennel with one of his toys. Give him lots of fuss or a treat whenever you see him go into the kennel.
 When he looks relaxed inside the kennel, or when he is eating his dinner in there, close the door for a few moments and then open it again. This should be for only seconds to start with and then slowly build up to minutes.
 Once your dog is happy with being shut in with you there in the room with him, practice leaving the room for very short periods of time and then returning. Slowly increase the time that you leave him alone. Puppies tend to get used to an indoor kennel very quickly, especially if you use it whenever they need to eat or sleep. It is particularly useful at night time, especially if you plan to have the puppy in the bedroom – all dogs and puppies need company for a proper night’s sleep. Older dogs may take a little longer and need more patience, but should get used to it with time (and a lot of treats!).

When should we use the indoor kennel?
As well as being a nice place for your dog to ‘chill out’ in, it can also help you to keep your dog safe at times when you cannot give him all of your attention. Here are some examples of when it will be most useful:
 If you have a new puppy and an older dog in your home and you cannot pay close attention to their playtime to make sure it is safe, you can put your puppy into the kennel to keep him out of harms way until you are able to watch them both.
 Puppies and dogs should never be left alone with children. If you cannot be there, then you can pop your dog into the kennel so that both child and dog can be safe.
 Puppies need a lot of rest – but often don’t know it. For over-excited, boisterous puppies that need some ‘time-out’, the indoor kennel be a quiet, restful place without distractions to relax in.
 If you are busy around the house, cooking for example, then your puppy can be kept safe in the kennel.
 During housetraining you can keep your dog or puppy safe in the indoor kennel whenever you are unable to keep an eye on him.
 When your puppy is teething and chewing everything in sight, you can place him in the indoor kennel with a safe chew toy so that he doesn’t destroy things that he shouldn’t.
 If you have to leave your puppy alone for short periods, then being in the indoor kennel will make your puppy feel safe as well as preventing toilet accidents and chewing disasters!
 You can also use the indoor kennel when travelling in your car as a safe resting-place.

Punishment?
You must never put your dog into the indoor kennel to punish him or to keep him away from the rest of the family. You should never keep your dog in the indoor kennel all day. All dogs - puppies and adults need lots of social contact throughout the day and must be taken out regularly for the toilet, exercise, play and training. Do not turn your dog’s home into a prison. Remember that the indoor kennel must be a place where your dog feels secure and comfortable at all times, and ideally, the door should be left open so that your dog can choose when he uses it (once past the puppy/training stages).
 It is not a place where children (or adults) should be allowed to tease your dog.
 It must never be used to punish or frighten your dog.
 If an indoor kennel is used as a place for punishment, your dog or puppy will never be happy there and will not want to use it as his home.

What's the point of the Kennel Club?

Programme Synopsis: It has a fine dining room and a celebrated collection of canine art. It has a charitable trust and organises the greatest dog show on earth. That doesn't stop Quentin Letts asking, "What's the point of the Kennel club?"

The kennel club was founded in 1873 by twelve Victorian gentlemen who liked dogs and dinners in equal measure, and wanted to bring some discipline into the world of dog breeding and showing. It's struggling to do that today. Some breeders and showers are in open revolt against Kennel Club health regulations. Others from the welfare lobby say the Kennel club hasn't been doing enough to tackle the suffering caused to dogs by generations of inbreeding.

Quentin enjoys the sunshine, spectacle and order of a dog show in Worcestershire, goes for a walk with a breathless dog suffering a range of genetic disorders, and enters the hallowed halls of the Kennel club Clarges street as he considers whether this British institution still has the teeth needed to improve the lot of dogs in this country.

KC Dog and Access

Launched at Crufts in 2006, the Kennel Club’s KC Dog is a free-to-join campaign that helps to promote and protect dog owners’ rights by keeping members informed about dog-related issues in their area.

Dog Control Orders
Section 6 of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act (Dog Control Orders) enables local authorities to implement the following restrictions, known as dog control orders:

The fouling of land by dogs and the removal of dog faeces
The keeping of dogs on leads
The keeping of dogs on leads by direction
The exclusion of dogs from land
The number of dogs which a person may take on to any land

Failure to comply results in a fixed penalty fine.

How does KC Dog work?
Councils must consult with the public on dog control orders prior to their introduction. KC Dog aims to alert local dog walkers to consultations taking place in their local areas to ensure that that they can have their say.

We campaign for dogs to enjoy maximum access to the UK’s open spaces in return for responsible ownership. We therefore look to work with councils to discuss problems and possible solutions to avoid the introduction of dog control orders. Rules, Boundaries, and Limitations

A dog's mother begins training puppies from birth. She makes them wait for food; she controls when they play and how far they travel. Adult dogs need these same rules, boundaries, and limitations from you, their pack leader.

A pack leader doesn't project emotional or nervous energy, so neither should you. In the wild, the pack leader uses calm-assertive energy to influence how the dog interacts with his surroundings. She enforces these laws in a quiet way, as is the case when a mother picks up a puppy by the scruff of the neck if he strays outside the den.

Ownership of territory is very important. Dogs in the wild claim space by first asserting themselves in a calm and confident way, and then communicating this ownership through clear body language signals and eye contact. A dog who understands that you, as the pack leader, own the space in which he lives will respect your asserted authority.

Waiting is another way that pack leaders assert their position. Puppies wait to eat, and adult dogs wait until the pack leader wants them to travel. Waiting is a form of psychological work for the dog. Domestication means dogs don’t need to hunt for food, but they can still work for it.

Establish your position as pack leader by asking your dog to work. Take him on a walk before you feed him. And just as you don't give affection unless your dog is in a calm-submissive state, don’t give food until your dog acts calm and submissive. Exercise will help the dog, especially a high-energy one, to achieve this state.

In all of these ways, the pack leader in nature sets rules, boundaries, and limitations for her pack, and in doing so, nurtures her dog's healthy state of mind.

Master the Walk

I often walk about ten dogs at a time, sometimes even off-leash if I'm in a safe area. People are amazed by this, but it's simple: the dogs see me as their pack leader. This is why they follow me wherever I go.

Position matters. Walking in front allows you to be seen as the pack leader. Conversely, if your dog controls you on the walk, he’s the pack leader. You should be the first one out the door and the first one in. Your dog should be beside or behind you during the walk.

Use a short leash. This allows you to have more control. Attaching the leash to the very top of the neck can help you more easily communicate, guide, and correct your dog. If you need additional help, consider theIllusion collar. Always keep your dog's safety in mind when giving corrections.

Set aside time. Dogs, like humans, are diurnal, so taking walks in the morning is ideal. I recommend setting aside thirty minutes to a full hour. The specific needs of each dog differ. Consult your vet and keep an eye on your dog's behavior to see if his needs are being met.

Define exploration time. After your dog has maintained the proper state of mind, reward him by allowing him to relieve himself and sniff around. Then you need to decide when reward time is over. It should always be less than the time spent focused on the walk.

Don't punch out. When you get home, don't stop leading. Have your dog wait patiently while you put away his leash or take off your shoes.

Share food and water.By providing a meal after the walk, you have allowed your dog to "work" for food and water.

Pick up after your dog! Set an example: be a responsible dog guardian.

More Rabbit Than Sainsbury's!

Just a reminder that theTregony Heavy Horse Show (Click here for more details) is upon us. Part of the festivities include a fun dog show and we thought it might be quite nice to get a SDC posse down to enjoy some four legged frolics! Details are sketchy and we think that entries are accepted at 12 with judging at 12:30, it might be worth getting there with time in hand just in case we have got our timings wrong.

If the thought of some serious socialising was not enough of a pull, then hows about the fact that its all in aid of Shelterbox and that the mighty Chas and Dave are performing! A right old knees up it promises to be. Hopefully see you there!

Thousands of healthy dogs put down because of rise in dangerous strays

Thousands of healthy dogs are being put down because Britain’s pet rescue shelters are over-run with dangerous strays, an investigation has disclosed.

The street fashion for dangerous dogs has caused the number of Staffordshire Bull Terriers – or “Staffies” – taken in by the Battersea shelter to rise by 85 per cent since 1996.

Lib Dem MP Tessa Munt in council tax row over DJ Andy Kershaw and his dogExperts said many owners were training the dogs to be so aggressive that they became uncontrollable and had to be abandoned. In some cases owners, saw dogs as being so disposable that they swapped them for MP3 players.
Of the 2,815 dogs put down by Battersea last year, 1,931 were healthy but had to be killed because they were too dangerous to be taken in by new owners.

Battersea, which spent £11 million taking in lost and unwanted dogs last year, only puts a dog down if it is unhealthy or its temperament makes it unmanageable.

But the shelter has been forced to plough hundreds of thousands of pounds into a new behavioural unit set up to retrain uncontrollable dogs in order to avoid a sharp rise in the number that have to be put down.
“Staffies” now account for more than half of the home’s longer term residents – dogs which have to stay at the shelter for up to two years to be rehabilitated.

The scale of the problem emerged in a special investigation for the BBC's Panorama.

Scott Craddock, director of operations at the home, told the programme: “In 1996 we took 396 Staffordshire bull terriers. Last year we took 3,600. For us that’s a huge problem - we can’t actually kennel these dogs with other dogs in many cases. They have to be given an individual kennel. So that has a huge impact on kennel space at the home.
“Battersea is mopping up a lot of the problems that are happening outside of the home. Big society problems; to such an extent that we feel it is time to say enough is enough”, he added

The RSPCA, Britain’s biggest animal charity, is under so much pressure from the influx of dangerous strays that it is no longer accepting dogs that are unwanted by their owners.
Tim Wass, the chief officer of the RSPCA inspectorate, said: “Last year, 2009, we killed 533 healthy dogs. And you'll notice I used the word kill there rather than put to sleep or humanely euthanize. There's been enough euphemism, we really need to tell it how it is and we really need to start doing something to prevent it having to happen in the future.”
The animal rights groups and Metropolitan Police have called on Government to step in to stop irresponsible owners abandoning their dogs by implanting the animals with microchips so they can be traced back to their original homes.
Ian McParland, Head of the London Metropolitan Police Status Dogs Unit, said: “We’ve said licensing is a way forward. To actually have an annual licence for dogs where dogs are micro-chipped. And the owners are required every year to keep the details up to date”.
The Government is currently considering a number of measures aimed to curb the rise in irresponsible dog ownership.

Dogs on Tour

Today was the day that the football ground opened it gates to steam engines, motor bikes, tractors and dogs. None of which are normally welcome on the hallowed turf of Sticker's very own theatre of dreams, but for Charity (The Merlin Project), today was different.

And so it was that the Sticker Fun Dog Show came to pass, gathering the great and growly of Sticker and surrounding areas. We all had a simply marvelous time in the summer sun picking up rosettes and goodie bags along the way.

I have posted the best of the snaps below (see the thumbnails at the bottom of the page), but have included the best of the best in the post. Hope you enjoy and see you on Wednesday : )
